About the Author

Kari Trumbo is a bestselling author of Christian historical and contemporary romance novels. Her books are known for characters who feel real, settings you could move to, and faith woven between the pages. She makes her home in central Minnesota with her husband of over twenty years, two daughters, two sons, and never enough time.

More from Kari

Have you ever hunted for seashells on the beach?

This sweet story actually starts twenty years before the moment you open the front cover. Years before, on a solitary beach, a little boy comforts a girl he finds crying by offering to help her find seashells. He doesn’t know why she’s crying, just that he can help. Even though he knows his mother will be angry with him.

You see, Rafe (that’s the little boy) has a mother who has minor OCD and doesn’t let him go on the beach. But when Annie (that’s the little girl) is obviously heartbroken, he can’t leave her sitting there and not do anything. At that moment, a hero is born.

It’s the little things that make a hero. That moment in time when he made a choice to put Annie above his own discomfort created a past for them both, an anchor they could both look back on. It was pivotal enough for them both that they remembered it years later. Rafe, because he hid the shells and cherished the one time he got to collect them. Annie, because she was going through something no child of five should have to. His kindness was a glimmer of hope.

Fast forward twenty years and these two meet again, but don’t realize right away they are the people they’ve been thinking about on-and-off for most of their lives. Interestingly enough, that part of my story is true. I had a friend I met at a local beach when I was too young to recall names or anything else of great significance other than the feeling that it was the best day ever. She made me her best buddy for the day, and that stuck with me.

When I think of this story beyond the printed page, where Annie and Rafe live on in my mind, I have to wonder if shells will continue to be a theme in their lives.

My Thoughts

Secret Beach Boyfriend is book 3 in the Independance Island series. I have read the previous two books - but they are all by different authors and can be read as stand alones. In this book, author Kari Trumbo has penned such a heartwarming story. Annie and Rafe are the main characters in this book. They met on the beach when she was 5 years old. They reconnect 20 years later. Annie has been through some hurt. She has had a rough past.  Rafe, being the swoon worthy hero - proposes to be her secret boyfriend. Will it get sticky? Will it work out? Can they both heal from their past?

The author has created characters with so much emotion and hurt that the readers can relate too. Annie has a lot of issues dealing with her parents divorce. I am a product of divorced parents and understood what she was dealing with. Rafe grew up with a mother who had severe OCD - and anyone that has had a parent that has had a mental health issue - will relate with him.  The author has done an amazing job with these characters. You can feel their emotions right off the pages. She also has done an amazing job with the description of the island. I want to go and visit! You will go on a roller coaster of a journey with this book - but it is well worth it.

Book Review - The Cedar Key By Stephania H. McGee

 ABOUT THE BOOK

Could the key to Casey’s future be hidden in someone else’s past?

Casey Adams unexpectedly inherits an old Victorian house full of other people’s memories. Stuck in a quirky little Mississippi town, Casey’s hope for a fresh start died as soon she had to lay the grandmother she’d just met to rest.

But Grandma Ida carried secrets beyond the grave.

Before her death Ida carefully planned a trail of clues to help Casey unlock the Macintyre family secrets and finally explain why they abandoned her. But each of Ida’s letters will only come from Casey’s handsome—and often frustrating—new neighbor. As Casey pieces together the stories behind the objects filling her grandmother’s house, she embarks on a heart-stirring journey that rattles her foundations, ignites her faith, and leads her to a startling discovery that will reshape her future. But only if she can face the lies that have been slowly tearing her apart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Best-selling author of Christian novels, Stephenia H. McGee writes stories of faith, hope, and healing set in the Deep South. When she's not twirling around in hoop skirts, reading, or sipping sweet tea on the front porch, she's a homeschool mom of two boys, writer, dreamer, and husband spoiler.

MY THOUGHTS

The Cedar Key by Stephenia H. McGee is an amazing book that is a must read. I have read several  books by this author and I have always enjoyed every single one of her books. My favorite thing about this book was the Mississippi town that the author has set her story in. It is the idealistic picture of what one will think of when they think of the south. I wish it was real, so that I could go and visit. I also liked that the book was written in first person narrative. I always enjoy this perspective because it makes me feel like I am in the character's shoes.

My heart felt for Casey. Discovering her grandmother - then losing her and inheriting her house with all the contents has to be rough. However, Ida, the grandmother has left behind a lot of clues to help Casey  piece together her life. I enjoyed following the little breadcrumbs that the author left and trying to piece it all together. The way that that the author described Ida's house and possessions made me miss my grandmother who passed away this year.
Ryan, the neighbor is also a sweet likeable character. You will feel yourself rooting for them the entire book. He knew Ida, and tries to help Casey piece together the puzzles that have been left. I enjoyed the journey that this book takes you on.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book  from the author.  The thoughts and comments are my own.

About the Author

Award winning author Kimberly Rose Johnson married her college sweetheart and lives in the Pacific Northwest. From a young child Kimberly has been an avid reader. That love of reading fostered a creative mind and led to her passion for writing. She especially loves romance and writes contemporary romance that warms the heart and feeds the soul.

Kimberly holds a degree in Behavioral Science from Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington, and is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers.

More from Kimberly

Certain Threat was one of my favorite books to write. There are three point of view characters. Two have been in the series from book one and the third is a new addition in this book.

I adore Frank, the hero of this book. The man is tough, honest, and always does his best to do the right thing. He’s a good example for his younger business partners who like to do things their own way, especially Carissa.

For me the most fun part about writing this book was getting inside Frank’s head. He comes across as tough and sometime gruff, but he is a marshmallow on the inside when it comes to Katrina, his neighbor. Katrina brings out a side in Frank we haven’t yet witnessed and it was a blast to write—no pun intended. LOL you’ll understand when you read the book.

I look forward to writing future books in this series and going deeper with the rest of the Protection Inc. team and their friends.

My Thoughts

"Certain Threat" By Kimberly Rose Johnson is book three in the Protection Inc. Series. I have read book 1, Direct Threat (see my review: HERE). The books are able to be read as a stand alone. In this book, we meet Katrina and Frank. Katrina overhears people talking about robbing the bank where she works at - her garage explodes. Katrina is trapped inside. Her neighbor, Frank who is Seattle police veteran, and a member of Protection, Inc, wants to keep her safe at all costs. He hears the explosion, and goes running out side. Why is she being targeted? Did she overhear more then she lets on?
The author starts this book out with so much action and suspense that you will not want to put it down.  The one thing that this author does - is keeps you guessing. You will think you have it figured out - and boom - something else happens. You will see Marc and Carissa (from book 1) again - but the author recaps the history. I can't wait to see what this author will come out with  next.

About the Author

Mary McCullough worked as an elementary school teacher for twenty-three years and is now an assistant elementary principal and building administrator. The co-founder of God First Friends, a ministry that helps women flourish as disciples of Christ, she is a longtime Bible study and Sunday school teacher for children and adults. She and her husband have been married for thirty-two years and have four adult children and three grandchildren. They live in Decatur, Indiana. Glorious Mess is her debut book.

More from Mary

Glorious Mess is the Biblical study of Hannah. As a perfectionist and control-freak, I had a neat and tidy life. That is until everything fell apart, and I found myself crying out to God for healing when life got out of control in so many areas. The more my world spun out of control, the more I identified with Hannah. She taught me about authenticity, grace, and perseverance. Her rival, Peninnah, taught me how to handle mean-spirited people and brought my own flaws to the surface so God could deal with them.

Year after year, I cried out for the healing I so desperately wanted at the foot of the cross. Mistreatment from others, the pain of watching others hurt, and my own weaknesses led me back to Hannah’s story time and again. It was Hannah’s journey from broken to bold and beautiful that kept me going. I wanted her confidence in the Lord. I wanted to stand up from my pain and never look back again on the pain but to know the God she knew. Some may think pain is in vain, but the Lord never wastes anything if we allow him to use it. I have learned of his kindness, faithfulness, and goodness beyond understanding. I’ve learned what it is like to be broken, and now I know what it means to be whole.

It is my prayer that each individual who goes through this study will be changed for eternal glory!

I’ve learned that your messes don’t define you, but they will refine you if you will lay them at the foot of the cross.

My Thoughts

Hannah is not a Biblical character that I am very familiar with. She is someone that I have remembered reading about in passing but have not studied a lot on. "Glorious Mess" is a 6 week devotion book that can be done easily. I can see this book being a part of a small group discussion. Each chapter opens with a Bible Verse, then the author's commentary, then a section that is called "make it personal" where she shares some of her own experiences. The author then has a small prayer and a discussion question. I would recommend having a notebook to write your thoughts in. The layout is easy to follow and adaptive for all women. The tone was not "preachy" rather it was like chatting with a close friend.  I enjoyed working through this book. Hannah's story is as important biblical figure as the others. The author did a great job with telling her story - and comparing it to modern day.

I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program. All thoughts are my own.

Book Review and Giveaway - Taming the Dragons Author: Brenda Wilbee On Tour with Celebrate Lit

About the Book

Book: Taming the Dragons

Author: Brenda Wilbee

Genre: Christian Living / Women’s Interests

Release Date: May 12, 2020

Are you overwhelmed, in despair, heartsick, or in danger? Not sure which way to turn? Whom to trust? Once upon a time . . . the raging dragon . . . a damsel in distress. It worked out well in our fairy tales, but what about real life?

In this highly creative approach to problems all women face today and in varying degrees throughout their lives, Wilbee identifies six choices women have when beleaguered by conflict and challenge. She partners six biblical women with characters from The Wizard of Oz, naming choices for Innocent, Orphan, Pilgrim, Martyr, Warrior, and Wizard. She then skillfully weaves in characters from other stories and tales, accounts of women from history and today, and experiences from her own life to illustrate how these choices empower women in difficult times, moving them from want to abundance—for themselves and others.

Beginning with Eve the Innocent, Wilbee asserts that while some of us might want to go back to the garden of Eden, where innocence dwells, no one can. It’s only by making choices to tame our dragons—and by walking the metaphorical yellow brick road of our inner journeys—that we can, and do, find the happily ever after of our fairy tales and the abundant life Jesus promises us all.

Each chapter concludes with a motivational section that includes journaling pages, “Something to Ponder,” and prayers for courage and hope.

The author of over 10 books with more than 700,000 copies sold, Brenda is a long-time contributor to Guidepost’s Daily Devotionals. Her work appears in Zondervan’s Women’s Devotional BibleInside Religious Publishing, and Guidepost’s Best Loved Stories. She holds an MA in professional writing, with an emphasis on myth, fairy tale, and folklore. She divides her time between the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and the Canadian Yukon.

More from Brenda

Author Brenda Wilbee wrote Taming the Dragons to help Christian women understand that they have choices when up against conflict and challenge. In this highly creative approach, she partners six biblical women with the characters from Wizard of Oz, naming choices for Innocent, Orphan, Pilgrim, Martyr, Warrior, and Wizard. She then skillfully weaves in characters from other fairy tales and stories, accounts of women from history and today, and experiences from her own life to illustrate how choice empowers women to tame the many dragons they face. She contends that by walking the metaphorical yellow brick road of learning choice, women find inner healing and restoration.

She begins with Eve the Innocent, asserting that even though we might like to go back to a garden of Eden, where innocence dwells, we can’t. But by making choices to tame the dragons we encounter as either Orphan, Pilgrim, Martyr, Warrior, or Wizard, we can, and we do, return to the happily ever after of our fairy tales and the abundant life Jesus, in John 10:10, tells us is ours.

Each chapter begins and ends with narrative to first explain a choice and to then offer the caveat. An Orphan asks for help, but by doing so she learns self-reliance. A Warrior fights to save herself and those she loves but has to be careful lest she become like her enemy. Each chapter concludes with journaling pages for personal thought, a study guide with Scripture to consider, and questions to ponder.

My Thoughts

"Taming the Dragons: Powerful Choices for Women in Conflict and Pain" by Brenda Wilbee is a must read for women. This is the first book that I have read by this author. The author presents her book with a series of Fairy Tales, which may seem odd for a Christian book, but honestly, I was able to relate to the stories easier when they are compared to some of my favorites from growing up. I think my favorite was chapter 2. The chapter is entitled "Innocent" and focuses on the story of Adam and Eve compared with The Wizard of Oz. Which is a family favorite movie. The lesson that she teaches comparing this two is a good one. She goes over how innocence is stolen in both. Dorothy's when the tornado comes and carries her a way to a far away land - and Eve when the snack hisses and confuses her.  I also liked that the author used personal experiences and what she has walked through to help stress her points. I can see this book being used as a small group study - there is a lot to unpack. The author has lots of Bible references/verses sprinkled through the entire book. I will hold onto this book and it will be re-read in the future. I received  copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own.
