My Thoughts - Unassailable Author: K.J. Rowe

About the Book

Book: Unassailable

Author: K.J. Rowe

Genre: Teen/Young Adult

To be picture perfect on the outside can cause people to think you have it all together on the inside. Which is exactly the case for Hope Meyer.

Stuck in a dead-end job with no vision for her future, parents arguing at home and newly-single under terms she bitterly objects to, Hope puts on a brave front in the face of friends. Only, she’s not as subtle as she thinks. Called out on her pretense by a close friend and, drawn into a mission project that causes her to question everything she’s been led to believe, Hope finds herself floundering.

Until recently, the perfect hair, manicured nails, a wardrobe straight out of a fashion magazine and a handsome suitor by her side had defined her. Now seeing those things as insignificant, and understanding why her boyfriend left, Hope turns to her youth minister for help; with one burning question in mind:

Who was she?

Set on a path of self-discovery, Hope finds her day to day both unraveling and piecing together like a jigsaw as her perception begins to alter.

Will she embrace how God defines her and ultimately learn what true happiness is?

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.

It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

My Thoughts

Unassailable is a young adult/teen story that is written by  K.J. Rowe. While I am not the intended audience, I enjoyed this book a lot. Hope is a young woman who seems to have it all together but in reality she is not happy with job, or the fact that she is single. I think we can all relate to the awkward early adult hood stages of life where you are trying to navigate adult life.

This is a good clean read for young adult readers. The author has done a wonderful job creating a beautiful story that reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. Even Christians have struggles.

The book is well written. The story grabs your attention within the first few pages. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

About the Author

Susan K. Beatty is in her third career—from journalist to homeschool tech writer to her life-long dream of becoming a novelist. She is proof you can start a new writing career late in life. Susan released her first published fiction in September 2019, and now an awarding winner author, this is her third novel, with several novelettes and short stories to her credit. She is passionate about finding courage through faith and grit. Susan lives with her husband of forty-nine years in Southern California. Add children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to the mix and she has little time for her favorite hobbies of reading, watching classic movies, British crime dramas, and traveling.

More from Susan

Long ago, when I was a journalism student and then a newspaper reporter, the idea of running a small-town newspaper “out west” fascinated me and was part of my daydreams. Of course, there hadn’t been an “out west” for decades before I had such ideas.

When Celebrate Lit asked me to be part of the Suamalie Islands series and I needed to choose a business for my main character, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to run a small-town newspaper, at least in fiction.

Margo, the main character, works for her father, the owner and publisher. But he’s stuck in the 20th century, and our modern heroin dreams of bringing the paper into the 21st century, much to her father’s despair. It was fun to explore the push and pull between generations, between old-school methods and new technology.

Although Margo is the heroine who finds the courage to expose the corrupt politicians, she has one major flaw, a fear, that hinders a news reporter’s job. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers, so you’ll have to read A Heart for News to find out what her problem was.

Then there’s the male main character, Steve Grayson, a famous race car driver, who comes to the Suamalies to recover from a racing accident and to face his own fears. And to pursue his own dream of building a driving school and racetrack.

After a rocky beginning, Margo and Steve collaborate to meet those fears head on and to see if, together, they can realize their impossible dreams, and just maybe find love.

I hope readers are encouraged overcome their fears and to pursue their own so-called impossible dreams.

My Thoughts

A Heart for News is written by Susan K. Beatty. This is book 4 in the Suamalie Island Series. The series is written by multiple authors - and they are all tied together by an island theme. In this story we meet Margo. She has invested her whole heart into working for her family’s newspaper. She soon finds out that two government officials are corrupt - and she finds evidence of blackmail.

Steve Grayson is heading to the island to recover. He is a race car driver. He has a fear of racing  and is hoping that will change. Margo is his tour guide, and he does know that she is a reporter - and all of a sudden the rest and recharge he wanted is gone and he is pulled into the investigation.

Margo is a fun character, she is sassy and does not show fear. However she  finds herself in danger with trying to uncover what is going on. I liked that there Mr. X wanted to give information to help bring down the corruption.

The author did such a great job with her descriptions - I could close my eyes and imagine the wind blowing and smell the ocean. I have enjoyed this series so far.

Thank You for the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

My Thoughts

Blue Ridge Mountain Escape is written by Loretta Eidson. This book starts out with action and suspense and does not let up throughout the whole story. This is a book that you will want to read in one sitting. I love that our main character is very strong in her faith and not afraid to express it.

Haley Gordon was looking forward to her vacation. Her friend was not able to come at the last minute, and she has had a run of bad luck so she decides to go on the vacation alone. She has recently found out that the guy that she was dating was actually married with kids. To top it off she went to work one day and found "out of business" sign on the door. She is hoping for a nice relaxing time. Until she awakes and finds her cousin in the cabin. She is shocked to see him, along with a few others. He was in prison and they had help from the inside getting out. Blake, her cousin has a dark side - and has no problem gagging and binding Haley. All is going according to his plan, until a wildfire comes knocking on their door.

Forest Service firefighter Kendall Simpson is shocked to find Haley bound and gagged. He learns that her cousin is one of the escaped inmates that he has heard about. He is leery of Haley at first, and is unsure if she is truly innocent. However he finds himself being attracted to her. They find themselves running for their lives trying to get to safety and not run into the escapees.

Both Haley and Kendall have baggage. Both have been hurt and have built walls up. However they find themselves in an impossible situation and have to work together to stay alive. The author did a great job with describing her scenes. I really could picture the Blue Ridge Mountain Escape happening.

Guest Post

Bella Disu explores the significance of multilingual children's books, embracing language diversity, and fostering linguistic skills in young readers. She discusses the use of multiple languages in ‘Soso and the Kako Leaf’ and the benefits of early multicultural and multilingual exposure.

Delve into how the book promotes cultural values and traditions. Explore the significance of passing down cultural heritage to younger generations and the role of children's literature in preserving and celebrating cultural identity.

'Soso and the Kako Leaf' and the Importance of Multicultural, Multilingual Children's Books

One of my core motivations for writing 'Soso and the Kako Leaf' was to help my children forge a stronger connection to their cultural roots. Ultimately, the story evolved into a vehicle for all kids to embrace their heritage and unique identity. I want to instil a deep sense of pride in our cultures, whether expressed by wearing traditional attire, learning indigenous languages, or engaging in cultural activities.

From the moment you pick up my book, you’ll notice the vibrant illustrations intentionally crafted to capture attention and reflect the richness of Nigerian culture. Depicted in vivid detail, traditional attires and accessories serve as visual reminders of our distinct cultural identity. While 'Soso and the Kako Leaf' is rooted in Nigerian culture, with a focus on my Yoruba and Efik heritage, its universal themes and messages transcend geographic boundaries. Children worldwide will relate to Soso’s story and immerse themselves in her world.

To enrich the experience, ‘Soso and the Kako Leaf’ is a multilingual book.

Growing up, many of us faced stigma while speaking our local languages. In Nigerian schools, indigenous languages were often labelled as "vernacular," leading some of us to suppress our linguistic heritage. Thankfully, times are changing, and more people now appreciate our linguistic diversity's immense value and beauty. 'Soso and the Kako Leaf' aims to contribute by encouraging children to proudly speak their languages, celebrate their cultural expressions, and wholeheartedly embrace their heritage.

In today's interconnected world, being fluent in multiple languages is a valuable asset that fosters a greater understanding of different cultures and expands access to opportunities. With scenes exploring the beauty of words and phrases from other linguistic backgrounds, ‘Soso and the Kako Leaf’ encourages language acquisition and cultural appreciation.

Like Soso’s birthmark in the story, our identity and heritage are not meant to be hidden. On the contrary, embracing them reveals hidden, untapped potential within each of us. By nurturing this, my book empowers children to become confident individuals who appreciate and contribute to the diverse tapestry of our global society.

As an author, my dedication to cultural representation and storytelling remains unwavering. I am committed to creating more books and animations celebrating our rich Nigerian heritage. Soso's world is set to grow, inviting children on a journey filled with captivating stories and diverse characters. Through these creative endeavours, my goal is to empower children to embrace their cultural identity and foster a love for their unique heritage.

My Thoughts

Soso and The Kako Leaf is written by Bella Disu. This is a story of a girl named Soso. Through Soso readers will be immersed in African Culture. We see Soso, who is self conscious about her birth mark. She does not want to wear the dress that she got for her birthday. She then finds herself in a magical land after following mounds at her brothers game. She then meets those in traditional African dress and learns that her birthmark is important.

The pictures in this book really tie the story together. The story is beautifully illustrated. I loved this story.

Thank you to the author, publisher  and IRead book tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
