Illusion of Truth takes Emily by the throat when her cop boyfriend, Brian Conner, responds to a disturbance only to be lured into a church bombing. Seriously wounded, Emily worries if he survives, will he be the man she knew? One-by-one, other officers linked to a crime years earlier are targeted. Was it covered up? Was Brian part of it? Emily discovers truth depends on who’s left to tell the story.

Look for Illusion of Truth coming in 2026. James also serves as the Executive Vice President of Mystery Writers of America.
Illusion of Truth is book three in the Detective Emily Hunter series that is written by James L'Etoile. I have read all the books in the series, but you can read them individually. The author does a great job in filling in the gaps and backgrounds. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
There is a series of explosions that rock Sacramento. Emily's boyfriend, Sargent Brian Conner is injured in one. Emily and her boss, do not think these are isolated incidents, but the mayor insists that they are. Emily being the badass detective that she is, will stop at nothing to find out who is behind this.
With true L'Etoile fashion, there are a lot of twists and turns. You will think you have it figured out, then boom - everything shifts. I loved that there were multiple threads going on within the book - not only is there the bombings, but Emily's mother who has dementia is declining.
This book is well written, and the storyline is engaging. The story moves at a fast pace, but you will not have an issue keeping up. There is deep character development and I loved seeing my favorite Detectives again and catching up.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Partners in Crime Book Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
