My Thoughts

A Man of Purpose and Power is a Christian Devotion written by Dr. Myles Munroe. While I am not a man, or the target audience I enjoyed this book and it brought up conversation between myself and my husband. This devotion will help men dive deeper into their relationship with God. The author has biblically backed up his statements with both scriptures in the Old Testament and New Testament. Each devotion will end with a prayer to reflect on. I would recommend this for a men’s small group study. I think that it has a lot of biblically sound material that could be unpacked with others.

Book Review -- Capitol in Crisis Author: Kathy Roy Johnson On tour with Celebrate Lit

She also assumes responsibility for briefing the press, making her job even more daunting. As the story unfolds, members of the Committee work together to find survivors and bring them to safety. We meet several true-to-life characters like Fire Chief Earl Bentsen who recognizes that time is of the essence and Rob Tate, a skinny maintenance worker who realizes that he can reach the Café as well as the mechanical room by crawling through an old vent space. Through several twists and turns, Simone maintains a steady hand, aided by the Speaker of the House, John McIntyre, who finds her very attractive. Although it seems an impossible task, one by one, victims reunite with their families.

About the Author

Kathy Roy Johnson worked for a U.S. Senator for three years in the mid 1970’s. Thereafter, she worked as a lobbyist for United Cerebral Palsy Associations, Inc. before joining the Federal government as Congressional Liaison. She retired in 2015 and live in Silver Spring, Maryland with her husband, Ed and their beagle/basset hound, Jake.

My Thoughts

Capitol in Crisis is written by Kathy Roy Johnson. This is a Christian Political Suspense Thriller. The author has previously worked for the US Senate so I feel that she wrote so much behind the scenes that I learned a lot from reading this book.

The book is slow at first, but it builds up and gives you the foundation you will need to go on the adventure. Simone Perez, who is the architect of the Capitol is shocked when the explosion happens. The explosion collapses the tunnel between the House and Senate Chambers. There are people trapped - and they are counting on her to save their lives. She handles the reporters who are firing questions and accusations with such grace.

This book contains so many other wonderful characters. They all work together try and get out of the rubble. Addie, in particular who owns the cafe that is destroyed. She was so worried how she was going to make ends meet.

The characters are well written, the storyline is believable. The author writes from her experience which was really unique to read. This was my first read by this author, and I look forward to more from her.

“The Importance of Setting in Fiction Writing”

My favorite element in writing a novel is setting. Making places come alive through storytelling brings special joy, and I’m fortunate to be able to do that in the pages of Island Charm.

Island Charm is my first beach-read, a standalone contemporary novel set in Key West. Key West is a small island in the Florida Keys, an archipelago that stretches west from the southern peninsula of Florida. The Keys dangle into the Gulf of Mexico like a string of island pearls. Key West is the last on the strand.

I first experienced Key West in the summer, but years later, I traveled back in winter. Whether its July or January, Key West is beautiful anytime of year. What I like best about the island is its walkability. It’s roughly four miles long and one mile across, making it easy to explore on foot. The boardwalk, docks, piers, and public beaches means there is plenty to experience. Fantastic views stretch in all directions.

Additionally, the island has an impressive literary history. Authors including Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Shel Silverstein, Philip Burton, Judy Blume, and Meg Cabot have all called the island their home at one time or another. It’s easy to see why my heroine, Anna, is so taken with the scenery, just like these writers. I hope readers will be as well!

My Thoughts

Island Charm is written by Audrey Wick. This is the first book that I have read by this author and it will not be the last. First and foremost I love anything that reminds me of the sunshine and the beach. This is a book that will leave you smiling. This is a book about a woman, who is finding herself. Anna, whose twin gets ditched before her wedding convinces her to go on the honeymoon together and have a good time. However, Anna is then ditched by her sister, and she finds herself heading to Key West by herself. (This is something that I would totally be ok with if it happened to me....)

Gunnar is the local island tour guide. He has fallen in love with the island and is very gifted in his tours. He has a great amount of patience. He is patient with the tourists and with his friend Jack, who has dementia (and one of my favorite characters) I loved the chemistry between Gunnar and Anna. It's so real feeling and swoon worthy.

This is a sweet romance easy read. I found myself smiling and chuckling throughout the whole book. I loved the characters, the story line and hope to see more from this author in the future. The author and her descriptions of the island will make you feel like you are there.

I love the friends-to-something-more trope. There’s something invigorating about the challenges of stepping into a different kind of relationship with someone you already know and trust. The risk of losing the friendship if things go badly comes to the forefront and each character has to decide if they’ll take the risk or keep things as they are.

For Nigel and Darcy, there’s the added difficulty of Nigel’s unrequited love. They’ve been best friends forever, and he’s loved Darcy all that time. And she’s clueless! How does that happen?

I wish I could say this story came from my own experience, but that isn’t the case. While my husband and I knew each other for several years before we started dating, we were hardly friends. High school social circles are brutal things. Plus, he had a crush on my cousin, and I was dating someone else.

But it all worked out.

And we’re best friends now.

When it came time to write Stealing the First Mate, I knew Nigel and Darcy were friends. It wasn’t until I worked my way through the first chapter that the depth of their relationship started to emerge, and I realized they were best friends. Darcy runs to Nigel for advise (even dating advise, which became really awkward for Nigel).

Darcy has been looking for Mr. Right so long she can’t see the truth staring back at her in Nigel’s eyes.

Writing their story is one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in writing.

My Thoughts

Stealing the First Mate is written by Tabitha Bouldin. This is part of the Independence Island Series. This is book 11 in the series. The series is written by different authors, but all tied together by the Independence Island theme.

In this book, We meet Darcy and Nigel. Darcy has not had very much luck in the dating market. She has failed miserably. Nigel, who works for Darcy's dad has been in love with Darcy as long as he can remember, however, her father has told him it will never happen. Because of this Nigel does not feel he is worthy. However, the two are friends. Nigel buries the feelings that he has for Darcy and tries to move on.

The author has written some real feeling characters. They are flawed. They have pain from their past - they have scars. The author has the characters evolve throughout the book - especially Nigel. He decides to trust God and let him lead him. I love the forbidden romance.

The characters are well written - the storyline is engaging, sweet and unique. I look forward to more from this author.
