Teaching kids about germs and washing their hands

By Rachel Wellner MD

The Doctoroo children’s book series is dedicated to teaching kids from pre-school to grade school about basic health issues and maintenance.  I use the format of a mystery followed by a global trip Doctoroo and friends take to solve that mystery to enhance the excitement of "catching the culprit" and teaching kids the basic health lesson.  My first two books are about good nutrition and hand hygiene respectively and this third book, Doctoroo and the Case of the Red Hot Hawaiians is about sun protection.

My 2nd book is called Doctoroo and the Case of the Hacking Hippo. Hilda the Hippo is an opera singer with a sore throat because of germs. She doesn’t wash her hands after shaking hands with lots of people. I wanted to teach kids that germs collect on our hands when we touch things and go about our lives. Handwashing can stop the spread of many illnesses – including the common cold and much more serious illnesses.

I truly enjoy teaching these lessons through fun, whimsical characters.

My Thoughts
Doctoroo and the Case of the Red-Hot Hawaiians is a children's picture book that is written by Rachel B. Wellner. This book is 44 pages long. I read this book with my 11 and 9 year old sons. We live in SE Alabama where right now it seems like the sun and heat are trying to kill us. My 11 year old son is also preparing for a week away at Boy Scout camp where he will be responsible for many things that mom usually reminds him of.
The lesson in this book is a good one. Protect your skin. Dr. Roo and her team travel the world to solve medical mysteries. This one is about traveling to Hawaii to find out why pigs have a mysterious illness. Dr. Roo figures it out - and teaches everyone about sunscreen.
This book is well written and the pictures tie in nicely to the story. The pictures are bright and colorful. We enjoyed this story. This book will be passed on to my teacher friend to share with her classroom.
Thank you to the author, publisher and IRead book tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
