Book Description:

It's Gator's first day at his new office job, and he is surrounded by quirky personalities like the slow slug, the obedient dog, the aggressive hawk, and the chatty chicken. He is eager to fit in with his new co-workers, so he tries to be like them. But acting like everyone else doesn't work out for him, and he learns a valuable lesson about himself instead. Featuring hand-drawn illustrations, vibrant colors, and rhymes, Animals at the Office sparks dialogue regarding first-day jitters, fitting in with new crowds, and embracing one's own special traits despite being surrounded by others who are different. Adults may relate to the featured characters based on their own experiences at an office and can use the book to talk more with children about their own job and what going to work means for them.

MY Thoughts

So, My children and I read this book when it came in the mail. We laughed and howled throughout it. It was full of colorful unique animals who worked in an office. I reread it today - and it had been a bad day at work. I found myself sitting on my couch laughing through it again. We see an alligator who is starting a new job. He is nervous and not sure what to expect. Each co worker he meets has a different office "personality". His cube mate - the slug reminds me of the sloth from Zootopia. He then meets a dog that does not stop going. Our alligator friend find out that he was getting burnt out moving at that speed. Then he meets a hawk that had a huge attitude - and then he meets a chicken who loves to gossip. He then realizes that he may be in the wrong place. He does not know if he can do this. He goes and talks to his boss, an owl, and she tells him - you need to be yourself. She tells him that each one of the animals bring something different to the table. Which is so true with kids at school. This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. We enjoyed this.

I received a copy of this book through the Iread blogging program -- all thoughts are my own.
