Book Review - Elysium Tide written by James R. Hannibal

About the Book

Dr. Peter Chesterfield is the top neurosurgeon at the Royal London Hospital. He's also a workaholic, and after a blow-up with a colleague, his boss orders him to attend a medical symposium at the luxurious Elysium Grand on the island of Maui. During a midnight walk on the beach, Peter pulls a woman with a skull fracture from the water. Despite all his skill, she dies in his arms, leaving him with only one clue to what happened to her: the word "honu."

Obsessed with finding the cause of his patient's death--discovering what or who ripped the power over life and death from his surgeon's hands--Peter becomes entangled in an ongoing investigation. He also becomes a source of deep irritation to detective Lisa Kealoha, who has jurisdiction over the case.

The reluctant pair join forces, diving deep into Maui's evolving gang culture, and unearth a conspiracy that runs deeper than either could have imagined. Knowing too much is deadly--and they must catch the killer before the killer catches them.

About the Author

James R. Hannibal

James R. Hannibal

Former stealth pilot James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. He has been shot at, locked up with surface to air missiles, and chased down a winding German road by an armed terrorist. He is a two-time Silver Falchion award-winner for his Section 13 mysteries, a Thriller Award nominee for his Nick Baron covert ops series, and a Selah Award finalist for his Clandestine Service series. James is a rare multi-sense synesthete, meaning all of his senses intersect. He sees and feels sounds and smells and hears flashes of light. If he tells you the chocolate cake you offered smells blue and sticky, take it as a compliment.
My Thoughts

Elysium Tide is a Christian Suspense book that is written by James R. Hannibal. This book is a book that you won’t want to put down.  Dr. Peter Chesterfield gets sent to Maui from the Royal Hospital. When we first meet him I felt he was an arrogant character. He evolved through the book. After he shamed another doctor in the OR the chief medical officer sends Peter to Maui to a conference.

Maui Detective and native Lisa Kealoha has returned home  after a stint in LA. She’s now the leader in a gang task force. There’s been a string of auto thefts and gang activity and she’s determined to find out whose responsible. Lisa has a broken past. She’s gotten herself in trouble a time or two. She went to LA to change her life.

These two characters hurt heads a lot. Peter is stubborn and doesn’t want to give up when he failed to save a life. Lisa feels Peter is getting in the way and compromising the investigation. They both realize they need each other’s skills to get everything sorted out.

I’ve read one other of the authors books. He does a great job at grabbing your  attention within the first few pages. The author bids a great job at balancing cultures. Both the native Maui culture and Peter’s English one.

Well written characters. Lots of action and suspense. I enjoyed this story.

I received a copy of this book through the Revell Reads blogging program. All thoughts are my own.
