My Thoughts - Relinquished Author: Susan K. Beatty

About the Book

Book: Relinquished

Author: Susan K. Beatty

Genre: Christian Woman’s Fiction

Release date: May 16, 2023

No one takes her kid and gets away with it.

When Teagan Parsons discovers that the Amber Alert on a celebrity couple’s child is actually her daughter, she’s determined to rescue the daughter she relinquished years ago. If she’d only realized the emotions her mission would rekindle…

Having a cousin in the FBI gets her closer to the case than she could have dreamed, but instead of listening to the lead FBI agent’s warnings to “leave the job to the professionals,” Teagan begins following everyone she suspects. That old saying, “Don’t quit your day job,” has never been truer, but she’ll do whatever it takes to bring her daughter home safe.

Mitch McCartney has enough trouble on his hands without dealing with a guilt-ridden, biological mother bent on making up for past sins. Teagan seems to have developed a talent for getting things wrong and putting herself in danger. Oh… and she’s adding theft to her rap sheet—theft of his heart, anyway.

Then Teagan goes missing.

Learning you can’t undo the past is a tough enough lesson without adding on more mistakes, but with Mitch’s help, Teagan may, with the Lord’s Guidance, forge a brighter future this time.

About the Author

Susan K. Beatty is in her third career—from journalist to homeschool tech writer to her life-long dream of becoming a novelist. She is proof you can start a new writing career late in life. Susan released her first published fiction in September 2019, and now an awarding winner author, this is her third novel, with several novelettes and short stories to her credit. She is passionate about finding courage through faith and grit. Susan lives with her husband of forty-nine years in Southern California. Add children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to the mix and she has little time for her favorite hobbies of reading, watching classic movies, British crime dramas, and traveling.

More from Susan

The seeds of a story sometimes lay dormant in an author for years. Then they grow and grab the author, demanding to be told. Until eventually the author gives in.

In my case, I didn’t have to give in. I knew I would write some version of the story eventually.

It began in 1968, when I was young, unmarried, and pregnant. It continued through 1969 when I gave my child up for adoption. Of course, any birth mother will tell you the actual story doesn’t end there.

After I became a Christian in 1973, I grew into a better understanding of my journey. New emotions had to be dealt with when my daughter and I were reunited in 1988 when she was nineteen. We enjoyed getting to know each other despite our differences in faith, but those lost years could not be regained—another set of emotions to come to terms with.

I couldn’t write our story, but I wanted to write something that revealed the emotional dilemma birth mothers wrestle with: forgiveness, regret, accepting that one won’t take part in the baby’s childhood, and, if there is a reunion, accepting a new reality. This usually means discovering, despite a newfound relationship, the birth mother will never be that child’s mom.

But I also wanted to show God’s grace, healing, and a hope for a future (including the addition of light romance).

Not wanting the book to get weighed down in maudlin narrative, I tried to lift it above the muck and show the birth mother’s strength and courage. What better way to do that than throw her in the middle of a dangerous, life-threatening situation?

Note to birth mothers: If you have unresolved issues, there may be triggers in Relinquished. I urge you to spend time in prayer and allow the Lord to heal you regardless of whether you read the book. And, if you need it, there is no shame in getting counseling.

Note to adoptive mothers: I hope you get a glimpse into the other side of the story.

Note to all readers: Praying the Lord shines through Teagan’s story to illuminate your heart.

My Thoughts

Relinquished is written by Susan K. Beatty. This is part of the Faces of Courage series, but can be read as stand alone. I had my oldest child at the age of 15. I contemplated adoption. While I ultimately ended up keeping her, this story made me thankful for choices.

Teagan Parsons gave her child up for adoption nine years ago. She wanted the child to be raised in a two parent household. When an Amber Alert goes out on a celebrity's child - Teagan realizes that the child missing is her daughter. She wants to help - cannot just sit around so she contacts her cousin, Bobbie. Bobbie is an FBI agent and is assigned to the case.

Mitch is frustrated with her at first - he thinks she is just trying to atone for past sins. However, he starts to see her grit and grace. She will even put herself in harms way to help find her child. I loved that even though she knows she has no legal claim to Gemma, she wants to do everything in her power to help. I loved that everyone was a suspect at some point in the story.

The book is well written. The story line draws you in within the first few pages. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

My Thoughts - Transhuman – Will We Obey God or Play God? Author: Rena Groot

About the Book

Book: Transhuman – Will We Obey God or Play God?

Author: Rena Groot

Genre: Apocalyptic Fiction

Release date: 2021

This work of apocalyptic fiction is based on reality to come. The lines have been purposely blurred between pure fact and pure fiction. It is a warning based on God’s Word. He has told us a time of unprecedented terror is about to come upon the earth. His wrath will be poured out on sinful and unrepentant humanity in a series of judgements. The intensity and severity of these judgements will be unparalleled in human history. The judgements will be on a global scale that will take place over a seven-year period.

The judgements are reserved for those who have chosen to reject Christ. Even in wrath God is displaying mercy. He wants the lost to be found. All who have rebelled against Him are given a chance to find Him. This is His last and final call to the sons and daughters of Adam. Sadly, many will harden their hearts and turn away from the most beautiful invitation ever to have been extended in all of human history. They will curse God and stay entrenched in their rebellious ways.

God does not hide this awful reality from us. He wants us to be wise and flee from the wrath to come. If we are already His He wants us to warn others—to point them to the narrow path that leads to life. TRANSHUMAN is based on my thoughts of what the world may look like at the halfway point in the Tribulation. The Rapture has already taken place. All who have been invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb are seated. Time will soon be no more. The curtains are opening on the world stage.

More from Rena

Transhuman – Will We Obey God or Play God? is book two in the Narrow Path Trilogy that is written by Rena Groot.  The author gives us a look at what the world may look like during the Tribulation. The author does  a wonderful job in making sure scriptures are added throughout the story to back up her ideas.

The author did a good job in exploring what may happen in the end times - friends and family turning on each other, genetic modification, and so much more. Josh is a likeable character as he sets out on his journey and feels that the spiritual leaders are pointing him in the wrong direction.

While apocalyptic fiction is not my go to genre, this story kept me reading late into the night. I love that this author can write across many different genres. The book is well written with great Biblical evidence to back it up. Thank you to the author, publisher, and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

About the Author

Mary Ann Hake, author of the Smells of the Seasons picture book series, has loved learning, reading, and writing for as long as she can remember. She has scribbled stories and poems since she first learned to write and has published hundreds of stories, articles, poems, puzzles, devotions, and more for both children and adults plus written hundreds of book reviews. She loved working in a bookstore and as a librarian and enjoyed reading to children at story times and conducting summer reading programs. She has also taught writing to children and at writers’ conferences. In addition to writing, she continues to work as a freelance editor. Visit her website, www.maryannhake.com, and sign up to receive monthly activities for children and updates on future books.

More from Mary Ann

My mother introduced me to books at a very young age. Mom read to me nearly every day—beginning with picture books then adding longer stories and poetry. I loved books and soon memorized the text of favorites so I could turn the pages and “read” them myself. (My own daughters did the same.) I could hardly wait until I went to school and learned to read so I could devour books on my own. In honor of my mom, The Smell of Summer’s release date is her birthday, May 15. I am her firstborn and her only summer baby. She always encouraged my writing.

My four-book Smells of the Seasons series are told in rhyme because that appeals to children. The Smell of Summer shares summer scenes from the life of April, a blind girl who uses her sense of smell to help her experience her world. The story includes elements that offer a fun companion text for connection to science including the senses, nature settings, animals, flowers, vegetable gardening, and other food. This is the second book in the series with April and her menagerie of pets.

Most people love summertime. This delightful picture book will stir up memories of summer experiences and offer some you may wish to enjoy this year. As the final page says:

I love the many summer smells.

So many stories each one tells.

My Thoughts

Mary Ann Hake is back with The Smell of Summer. We get to see April, who is blind smelling all the sweet smells of summer. We set out on another adventure while we get to "see" the world through April's heightened sense of smell.

We get to see her discover summer through flowers, bees, fruits, veggies, cookout foods, zoos and so much more. April is able to experience summer through all this. I read this story with my 10 and 12 year olds and it led to great discussions about our senses and how they all work together.

The illustrator pairs each page with beautiful pictures to have to story all tie together. I am really enjoying this series. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

About the Author

Mary Alford grew up in a small Texas town famous for, well not much of anything really. Being the baby of the family and quite a bit younger than her two brothers and her sister, Mary had plenty of time to entertain herself. Making up stories seemed to come naturally to her.

As a preteen, Mary discovered Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew instinctively that was what she wanted to do with her over-active imagination.

She wrote her first novel as a teen, (it’s tucked away somewhere never to see the light of day), but never really pursued her writing career seriously until a few years later, when she wrote her first inspirational romantic suspense and was hooked.

Today, Mary lives in Texas with her husband and loves to create characters who face dangerous situations with faith on their side.

Mary is very active online and would love to connect with readers on Facebook, Twitter, or any of the social media platforms listed at maryalford.net.

More from Mary

Before the Story Begins

Every good Christian romantic suspense has a beginning where the hero and heroine are introduced to each other and to the danger they’ll be facing, followed by an ending where everything (usually) is tied up nicely.

In Christian (and Amish) romantic suspense, there must equal amounts of danger, romance, and faith.

As a reader, one of my favorite parts of the book is when the hero and heroine have backstories that draw me in and have me pulling for them to overcome their pasts as well as the villain chasing them.

In AMISH WILDERNESS SURVIVAL, the heroine, Leora Mast has a heartbreaking backstory. As a teenager, Leora’s and her twin brother Tanner’s parents were killed in a fire that was later ruled arson. They relocated to Colorado to be closer to their aunt and uncle and grandparents. Soon after, Leora’s brother left the Amish faith and joined the marines.

As an adult, Leora has gone through 2 separate rounds of breast cancer. She’s just finished the final round of chemo when her brother goes missing and Leora travels to West Kootenai, Montana to find Tanner’s marine lieutenant hoping to get answers about her brother’s disappearance.

Instead of finding her brother or Ethan Connors, she runs into Fletcher Shetler and the danger unfolds quickly from there.

Fletcher Shetler’s family has seen their share of heartaches as well. They have lived in West Kootenai for several generations. Fletcher’s grandfather started the furniture making business and the family mill their own timber for the pieces they create. Fletcher has a big heart and has been taking care of his mother since his father passed away.

Fletcher can’t imagine living anywhere else but his West Kootenai community and being part of a close family. But that loyalty cost him the love of his future bride when she chose to leave the community and break his heart.

Both Leora and Fletcher must put aside their pasts to try and find out what happened to her brother and Ethan before it’s too late.

From facing down armed kidnappers, to almost being swallowed alive by a sinkhole, to being forced to hideout in a cave in order to avoid being captured, Leora and Fletcher face one trial after the other, and yet they persevere thanks to each other, Ethan’s K-9 German Shepherd dog, Molly, and their faith in God that is unshakable.

My Thoughts

Amish Wilderness Survival is written by Mary Alford. This is part of the Love inspired suspense line. The book is a stand alone however characters in previous books are mentioned. I have enjoyed this series and getting to meet the Shelter brothers.

Leora Mast has traveled to Montana trying tl find out what is going on wkrh her brother. He seemed to disappear from a job he loved and was cryptic in everything he said to her. She shows up looking Tanner’s friend, Ethan who she confided in that she was worried and when she arrives Tanner and Ethan are nowhere to be found.

Fletcher Shetler has enjoyed working with his brother and Ethan with training search and rescue dogs. Something feels off and he goes to Ethan’s place to investigate. He finds Leora scared and alone. They join forces to try and unravel the mystery of Tanner and Ethan.

The author starts the story off with heart pounding action and suspense. She does not give us a break. Every turn of the page there was a new adrenaline pumping scene to read. Leora and Fletcher try and find out what Tanner could be involved with and why they are being chased.

This book is well written. The characters are well developed. Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Book Excerpt

"Harper." His eyes locked on hers but with no hint of the grin he'd offered the others.

"Here." A completely unnecessary answer. The silence stretched into awkwardness before he looked back down at the tablet and cleared his throat. "Trent, Shannon."

"Present!" The light-haired girl next to her sang out, and the tightness in Harper's chest reminded her to breathe.

His gaze slid from Shannon back to Harper, then he quickly looked down and rubbed his forehead with his fingers. Another flash from the past raced through her mind. A memory from that night, rubbing his brow with his fingers mere seconds before she shut the door on him, cutting him out of her life forever.

But forever had only lasted eleven years, because there he was. Plain as day. Right in front of her.

Shannon leaned in. "I think our hunky professor might be crushing on you!"

Harper shook her head. "Definitely not crushing." Not now, at least.

Her face heated as her hands squeezed together on top of the desk. She thought she'd left all of those memories behind. All of that pain. Yet here she sat, face to face with one of her biggest regrets.

He set the tablet on the podium. "Let's get started." He squared his shoulders, standing at the front with his hands braced on his hips, looking everywhere but at her.
