Healing Hazel is book number three in the Blue Orchid Society Series that is written by Jennifer Moore. I have not read the other books in the series, and had no problems following along. Just for content purposes I will be going back and reading the other books. The other characters are Hazel's friends and have been introduced in previous books.
This is set in 1873. Hazel is staying with her Uncle and is preparing to visit her father in the Canary Islands for Christmas. She sets out with a traveling companion, her friend that she met during her stint in nursing school. They arrive to where her father is supposed to meet them and are instead met with one of her father's men, Captain Bryant. He is not able to meet them and Hazel is crushed. She had been looking forward to spending time with him. The Captain, Hazel and Nella start the trip back and find themselves in the midst of battle when someone plants explosives under the train and it explodes.
Hazel has always wanted to be a nurse, but due to her panic issues she had to stop going to school. However her instinct kick in and she starts to help those that are injured. When Dr. Jackson and others from the Red Cross International Hospital show up they are impressed that so much has been done. However, at first Dr. Jackson is annoyed that she keeps hanging around, but he realizes she has a passion to help others.
This was such a great story. The characters were well written. I am not familiar with the war that was going on during this story. I felt that I learned alot about this portion of history. The author did careful research.
