Excerpt

I’d like to say that life improved, but I’d be telling you a lie. Elwood Bledsoe continued to bully Aarush. While Aarush constantly cautioned me to rein in my reaction to him, I could not. It landed me in two more detentions, and the last one finally cost me my job at the supermarket where I bagged groceries.

“You’re coming for dinner,” Aarush informed me one afternoon.

I shook my head. “Can’t.”

Aarush neatly packed his brown bag with unfinished food and said, “You have to come over. You’re not working. Tonight they are announcing the winners of the Find My Power Essay on television. Devon Neely has to win. Imagine losing your sight and learning— ”

“Aarush, they’ll never accept a blind kid.”

“They took that girl Lydia,” he blurted.

They had indeed.

“She’s not blind,” he retorted.

I raised my eyebrow. She hardly looked like someone people expected to make it into the Temple. All I could recall was she seemed most unremarkable. Most of the kids who were accepted had a rare talent. They could run the fastest or do math without a pen or paper. I couldn’t remember what made her special.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be? To the boy, I gave a black eye when he pushed my blind brother into the street. No, wait, he should apologize to me.

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have? Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre? I don’t think I am anything like other people who write this genre and I think I sound vastly different from them.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received? Get a good editor. Quit your day job.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life? This book is filled with people I know and have watched struggling with the idea they are not good enough for everybody else. It’s based on every bully who forced me or someone I loved to question their value.

MY THOUGHTS

Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex is written by Carol P Roman. This is a Middle School Fiction book that I read with my 11 year old son. We both enjoyed this book very much. There is a bit of cursing in this story, so please be mindful of that. This is the first book that I have read by this author.

The story follows an average kid who lives with his uncle. Grady and his friend, Aarush wish to attend the prestigious Templeton Academy. They find themselves getting in along with the school bully. The location of the school is a secret location. This is a transition from middle school, to high school. This is the school where they can learn superhero stuff. (This reminded us of Harry Potter )

I like how the author created realistic characters. We see Grady with asthma and Aarush with autism. I feel that this is important for this day in age since there is so much bullying going on. My son has some issues that have caused him to get picked on, so he really seeing a character like this. I feel others that have the same issues can relate.

The book is well written. There is great character development. My son and I really enjoyed this story.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Goddess Fish Promotions for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
